Reading without foundations is a sandcastle
Skipping vocabulary and sentence structure to jump straight into passages is why so many test takers stall around 350 in Reading. You cannot scan for an answer in a sentence you cannot parse. Fix the basics first: parts of speech, tense and voice, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions cover the majority of Part 5. Add 30 recycled TOEIC words a day with cumulative review, and Part 7 speed rises on its own.
The 10-8-55 plan that tames 75 minutes
A reliable split is 10 minutes for Part 5, 8 minutes for Part 6, and 55 minutes for Part 7, leaving a couple of minutes to check flagged items. That means roughly 20 seconds per Part 5 question: if you cannot see the structure in 20 seconds, mark it and move. Time saved early is time you spend on the multi-passage sets, where each question is worth the same point but costs three times the effort.
A sentence-analysis routine stronger than an error notebook
Rewriting the correct answer teaches you nothing. Instead, take every sentence you misread, bracket the subject and the main verb, mark the modifiers, and translate it once literally. Ten sentences a day for a month rebuilds the parsing speed that Part 7 rewards. Keep the sentence that justified the correct answer next to your note — that habit turns reviewing into evidence-finding.
Paraphrasing: the trap you must learn to read
TOEIC almost never repeats the passage wording in the key. 'Expand the business' becomes 'grow the company'; 'complimentary' becomes 'free of charge'. Partial-match options are the most dangerous: they state something true from the passage that does not answer the question asked. Read the question stem carefully, then verify your choice against a specific line, not a general impression.
Target-score focus and deliberate trade-offs
At 600, secure Part 5 grammar and single passages, and treat triple passages as bonus. At 750, push single-passage accuracy above 90% and shorten Part 6. At 900+, you need multi-passage sets in 25 minutes and comfort with cross-document inference plus NOT/TRUE elimination. Choosing what to skip is a scoring skill, not a weakness.
